Pain

Pelvic pain is one of the symptoms most associated with endometriosis. Pelvic pain can be during menstruation or an everyday occurrence. The severity of the pain depends on the person and has no correlation with how extensive the disease is. Pain can also occur in the lower back and in the legs.

Treatment of pain is variable. NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have been shown to help with pain. Common over the counter NSAIDs include asprin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. These drugs help prevent inflammation associated with endometriosis by blocking prostaglandins. Primrose oil, acupuncture, yoga, and exercise are also said to reduce pain for some individuals.

Constant pain impacts the quality of life for women who suffer from endometriosis. Chronic pain can make it hard to deal with life day-to-day. This is discussed in more depth in the “Employment & School” post.

Personally, I live with pelvic pain every day. Even as write this, I am in pain. Pain has become such a daily part of my life that I sometimes forget what it is like to go two days in a row without it. I spend a lot of my life trying to prevent, manage, and deal with pain. I live with the constant worry that my pain will flare up at the wrong time and I will have to miss something important.

I try not to discuss my pain too often. My family knows, but I still don’t discuss my pain each time it occurs. I worry that if I talk about it I won’t be taken seriously. My body looks fine on the outside, so some people have trouble believing there is pain on the inside. I also avoid talking about it because I don’t want to annoy people. I am annoyed enough by my pain and I don’t want to share that.

I have found that with chronic pain I sometimes feel disconnected to my body. I begin to hate it. I have looked at my body like it is a separate entity that is causing grief in my life. I have had to become mindful about loving my body and making sure I separate the pain from who I am. I sometimes wonder who I would be without feeling chronic pain.
